Digital Proposal
Fluency Chasers
Some people complain about young learners spending too much time following influencers and “online celebrities” instead of dedicating such time on “more productive” content. But what if these new trends were used as valuable tools to motivate students work on their English fluency? This is the core of our Fluency Chasers project, which consists of an online blog where intermediate/advanced English learners can upload videos talking about their favorite subjects. The main objective of this project is to help students achieve English fluency which, based on our experience, seems to be one of the main aspects that students struggle with.
These are some of the characteristics of our Fluency Chasers proposal:
-
Topics
will be updated on a weekly basis. Consistency is one of the key aspects to
achieve fluency in a foreign language. This is why students will be asked to
upload content to the blog at least once a week. This content needs to be
related to the topic of the week, which will be stablished by the pre-service
teachers.
-
Social
media related formats. Along with the topic of the week, a specific format will
be suggested which, at the same time, will be closely related to what students
see on social media. Some examples are inspired on common trends such as Get
ready with me and Story Time.
-
Online
community. Besides helping students with their fluency, this project also aims
to create a sense of community among learners. Besides uploading content,
students will also have the chance to interact with each other’s posts.
-
Language
tips. The blog will also include some language expressions and some tools that
are intended to help students enrich their speeches.
Implementing the Fluency Chasers project presents both significant challenges and exciting opportunities. One major challenge lies in the reliance on students' willingness to engage with content, as their motivation directly impacts the success of the initiative. If students fail to consistently create and upload their videos, it could lead to gaps in participation, affecting the overall dynamics of the class. For that reasons we decided create the material. However, this project also capitalizes on students’ interests and everyday experiences, making it more relatable and appealing. By focusing on themes such as makeup, which resonates with many young learners, we can encourage them to explore diverse vocabulary and grammar structures in a context that feels relevant and engaging. This dual approach not only enhances their fluency but also fosters a sense of community among learners, transforming the act of language acquisition into an enjoyable and meaningful experience.
